American Lake
      #59216 - 05/22/03 03:02 PM

Went to American 2 days ago to fish for Kokanee. Between 2 of us we only caught one Koke, in the past at this time of year the Kokes are usually biting pretty well and limits are to be expected, tried several different Koke tactics and many different depths and fished all over the lake. Has anyone else given American a shot for Kokes? Did we just have a bad day, or is the Koke population down this year at American?

Didn't see any other Koke fishermen out there either which is also a little unusual for this time of year.

Was wondering the same myself. Never fished for them but American is 5 minutes from my house and I am gonna give it a shot this afternoon. The report in the tribune (Bills Boathouse) said nothing is happening yet.
Do you use DR's for those things? How deep do they usually run?

Yeah I use the DR's - typically you can catch them from 20-40 feet down, I like to use a Mack's Flashlight pop geer setup with a maggot baited hook about 2 feet behind the flashers, the Flashlight are lightweight so you get a good fight on ultralight gear from the Kokes, unlike what you get from the heavy metal stuff. You can also use a small dick nite behind the gear, or a small wedding ring tipped with corn or maggots. Good luck, let us know how you do.

Thanks for the tip Quill, we fished it pretty hard from about noon to 5:00. My son got a real nice bow trolling the surface with a rooster tail, taped out around 16" and had some shoulders.
As far as the koke's go, we didnt hit any. We were marking huge school's 30-50 fish right on the bottom in about 50 feet of water. Were these koke schools? If so they didnt touch my pop geer with dick nite trailer. Ran it right through em several times. We also had it tipped with a maggot. Did see several other koke fishermen out today, didnt here any reports though. It was packed today and it aint even the weekend.

Good luck

Don't know what's up with the American lake Kokes this year, that's a nice Bow your son got there RL. I think the next time I take the boat out will be for the 6/1 opener at Point Defiance.

Good ole American lake. My boy and I used to hook a lot of bows trolling light spoons. Sometimes we fished off the dock at Bill's Boat house. Nice dock in over 30' of clear water. Either fished off the bottom or slip bobbered. Lots of fun and easy limits.

Rock...with that GI access I'm surprised you haven't done some banking it on North Fort. Some nice deep "lunch time" holes on Little American.
