what kind of fern is this? I've got it growing in my yard and I never planted it. Can you buy these at a nursery?

Looks like Lady Fern. NWPlants.com
Grows in my yard by the thousands. I don't know if you'd want to buy this and grow it. Pretty much a weed here. It spreads and gets out of control pretty quickly.

I did notice the spreading but keep up with the little stray ones as soon as they apear. I moved the fern from it's original start, right on the path way of course to a corner by a fence and it must like it there, and it fill's out that area nicely. They must like damp soil I'm guessing.

Thanks AuntyM I checked out that link and it sure looks just like the one in the picture. Now I can tell the neighbors what it is since they keep asking me. I can tell them it's a Athyrium filix-femina (LADY FERN)

This really looks like a bracken fern (Pteridium aquilinum),the world's most common fern, to me. But of course I may be wrong.... A larger view of the whole leaf would tell. Bracken fern leaves are broadly triangular while Lady fern leaves are diamond shaped in outline, with the blade tapering toward the base.

Your probably right Wiser. I have three other types of ferns growing also. Sword fern and two I can't identify. I need to go for a walk and look, since it may be I have 5 kinds now.
