Preparing a gooeyduc
      #61017 - 06/07/03 06:39 PM

Now if I was to actually get one of these buggers what do I do with it after dragging it out of the sand? How do I know I got a gooey instead of a horse clam too?

A horsey has a leathery brown outer shin on its siphon and 2 horny plates on the tip.....a dux doesn't have either. The ol'finger tip test of the siphon before digging will usually let you know what's in the ground.

As for preparing. There's 2 parts...the body meat and the neck. Cut the neck off and grind for chowder or butterfly into steaks. You'll have to pound the crap out of them to tenderize. Treat the steaks like razor clams...do not overcook. The body is pretty simple...just remove the gut ball and your ready. The body meat is tender and can be sliced into steaks or strips...I like them cooked on a very hot barbecue. Warning geoduck has a pretty rich flavor unlike any other clam. Makes a superb chowder. Lastly for the braver souls...one of my favorite ways to eat geoducks is freshly ground raw body meat in bowl with lemon or lime juice squeezed over it and a little sea salt .

Dude, you stuck your finger where? I have always wanted to go gooy digging. When I was about5 or 6 my parents were out camping on the beach and couldn't find me. When they did find me, 2 strangers had me by the ankles lowering me in there gooyduck hole to help them out. Boy were my parents pissed. That was until the guys gave them some duck.

Wear Rubber Gloves

I can manufacture a Galvanized Steel tube 12" diameter by 30 tall for $20.00 . Not the toughest thing but will hold out pretty well if you are somewhat careful.

Here is what you do -
Find the bugger.
Place "Gun" cenetered over 'Duc
Dig as deep as you can, until sand starts to cave in around outside of gun. Next pull off mound in middle. Center Gun again and (carefully) drive gun as deep as it will go. Dig out sand in middle of gun. Grab the bugger and fire up the Oil!

Keep one eye toward the Surf or you might find yourself with your head in the gun and your feet sticking strait up in the Surf!
