Geoduck Harvesting
      #61425 - 06/10/03 07:48 PM

Basically you are looking at getting your hand on a critter 3 feet down in the sand or muck. No they don't dig to escape you...there body is stuck where it is at. I know of a couple places where you can dig them easily with a shovel but generally you'll need something better. One method is a posthole digger....start doggin a hole just big enough for your arm...no bigger....on the water side of the siphon show. Go down about 3 feet carefully so the hole doesn't collapse....and you'll usually be able to reach in and get your hand around the bottom of the dux shell....pulling on anything above is usually futile....them suckas can really be cemented in. The other method is to use a canister of some sort....I've seen stovepipe used but usually its a custom made tube bout 3 feet long and of varying widths. You carefully work it down around the duck and remove the stuff inside. Realize with all these methods that sometimes the duck will be just a few inches out of reach....thats when the brave are needed as you're gonna get saltwater and sand in your ears .

Next time I get out on the beach I am bringing an old pair of waders. I plan on propping 'em up on sticks or something so the soles are facing up and stick em in the hole. As the tide comes in it will look like someone is stuck in the goeyduck hole! Great Avatar, eh!

We manufacture candle molds here. One of the materials we use is galvanized steel. I can make you a "Duck Gun" that is 12" in diamter by 30" tall for $20.00 (+shipping). If you want to place an order give me a call at 800 888 9425. Ask for Gutz (not!) Jeff. I could also pack 'em down to the Cowlitz if you let me know a few days in advance.

One of my goals in life is to bonk a geoduck, and there's no tides like the present weekend.

What do you look for in the sand that shows there is a geoduck down there instead of some other big clam? Is it like a razor clam depression, but silver dollar size? Is the limit 2 per person?

How embarrassing would is it be to get skunked clamming? Went razor clamming once and it took 45 minutes to get the first, then cracked everyone of them for my 2/3 limit.

Mission complete. Didn't take the post hole digger after talking to a digger at work. Spade shovel worked fine. Damn good eats. Can't wait for next years annual event. Thanks gooose!

How much duck can a geoduck dig, if a geoduck can't duck dig?

Gooose isn't doing this out of the goodness of his heart. He has an AGENDA.

Gooose is planning all his future fishing trips on super low tide days. He plans to get all of us out there chasing shellfish while HE goes fishing. He hates

Obviously I have known him longer than most of you!

While butchering those ducks (2) I was telling the wife some people eat it raw. She say's slice me off a chunk. We ate a slice o'raw, no big deal. Cerveche might be the way to go. We also got limits of steamers and passed up the monster oysters that they must have brought in by boat and dumped. There must have been 150 people digging on Saturday. Everybody was happy as a clam on high tide as all were laughing and having fun gathering their night's dinner. Next year I will have a duck gun and also a razor clam shovel for going in for the KILL. The spade shovel works, but the extra tools can put you in where the big dogs live. Now back to fishing. Mouth of the Hoh is calling my name for a 3 day trip.

Right on B2B...yes geoduck ceviche would be very good. So you must have went to Kopachuck.....them oysters are big but I know where there are huge herd of them critters that are way bigger.....think dinner plate dimensions . Not your typical oyster shooter size .

Yep Gooose, that's the zipper.

Duck Gun by Gutz's post:

I can manufacture a Galvanized Steel tube 12" diameter by 30 tall for $20.00 . Not the toughest thing but will hold out pretty well if you are somewhat careful.

Here is what you do -
Find the bugger.
Place "Gun" cenetered over 'Duc
Dig as deep as you can, until sand starts to cave in around outside of gun. Next pull off mound in middle. Center Gun again and (carefully) drive gun as deep as it will go. Dig out sand in middle of gun. Grab the bugger and fire up the Oil!

Keep one eye toward the Surf or you might find yourself with your head in the gun and your feet sticking strait up in the Surf!

We don't have ducks down in Coos Bay, but growing up we got gapers (think you call them horse clams) by cutting the bottom out of a 5 gallon bucket. Center the bucket over the hole and then stand on it/work it into the mud. When the bucket is fully sunk, you can dig your hole without the walls falling in. we'd only go down about 2 1/2' for them but this should allow the extra 6". The limit was 12 and we could fill that in about an hour and a half to two hours.
