I've got a couple quick crabbing questions. First whats the best bait to use when crabbing in areas such as Westport, WA and Second can I use the same bait oils that I use for Steelhead or Salmon such as Pro-cure herring or sardine oils and either inject them into the bait or rub them all over? Thanks

just about anything will work for bait. some faves are salmon heads, cheap steaks, herring, turkey legs, and canned tuna (in oil seems to be a bit better). yes you can rub scents into the bait too, I often rub a coating of Mike's Shrimp Oil into steaks and turkey legs when I use them.

If you are crabbing in the Westport boat basin marina off the floats, you probably do not need any scent on your baits to attract crabs. There are thousands of crabs, most of which are undersized, in the boat basin, and you won't have any trouble attracting them to your bait.
Be warned that there are several bait-steeling sea lions in the boat basin. If you simply tied your bait to your trap, the sea lions will steal it or the smaller crabs will peck it apart within an hour. I suggest putting your bait in a heavy mesh bag or wire bait cage, and then tying it securely to your trap.

What about in Hood Canal, same bait. How much chicken or turkey would I use?

Thinking of adding a small chunk of salmon, turkey leg and a can of tuna into a bait cage. Would that be too potent for them? or would it be fine. The salmon is from last year that I didn't eat.

The problem with adding the fishy smelling bait is that sometimes seals and sealions will mess with your pots. Otherwise it shouldn't be a problem.

Shad work great as well. That's all I put in my traps anymore and they always fill up with crabs.

At the Westport Marina wire a 25/0 treble to the bottom of your crab ring and use a 1/2" floating nylon retreival line to the pot anchored securely to one of the upright poles on the dock.
Use fresh salmon for bait, wire it onto the treble while hiding the hook . Use 0.32 stainless wire.
Then throw the thing out a bit and sit down on the pier so you won't be jerked off your feet when the 1000lb 4 finned Crab you are about to catch is hooked and hits the end of the retreival line..
It's a joke.. don't throw that out there.....please...

chicken, chicken, chicken! I buy the 5lb quarter packs when on sale for $0.39/lb. Best deal around. Sometimes I through in some hourse clams I froze after clamming. We also save the salmon heads, tails, etc from our catch.
