I have dinked around doing Log Carvings, but nothin too exciting, I am decent at Art, just think I need the right tools......So
Does anyone do these, what tools do you use?
I want to get into this, moreso than I have in the past.

Also
What type of wood, works best?

Any Input Appreciated

Ya, that is exactly what I mean.

There are some that I have seen with major detail that I assume involve much more than a chainsaw, which is what I used.

I would like to make Unique ones.

Wayne,

The log carving place in Allyn is probably a good place to learn/observe. Billed as the "world’s largest chainsaw carving outlet," I think its a good start. They typically use cedar since these are yard decorations that sit out in the weather.

O wonder if my neighbor is willing to part with some ends he has lying around. I will check!

The irrigation festival featured driftwood art this year. Very fancy stuff and quite unique. to get ultra detailed the dremel will do some carving after the chainsaw work.

Some of the chainsaw artist use a electric chainsaw for the fine work.

The best ones I have seen were sanded and varnished. Real works of art.

Guy R. had some log benches on his website for sale a long time ago. The back of the bench had a carving of a salmon on it. I was really interested but being he didn't list a price I forgot about it.

I make salmon and steelhead silhouettes out of fence board. Some are dimensional replica's of actual fish I've caught. The big fish requires two 8 inch fence boards butted up against each other to get the girth and width of the tail. I hand draw them, then cut them out with a jig saw. They are nailed on my fence in the backyard.
