World Fly Fishing Championships - Spain - GO USA
      #61920 - 06/15/03 01:57 PM

World fly fishing championships for trout are in Spain this week. An internet fly fisherman friend from Arkansas is on the team - Johhn Wilson from Arkansas.

Check out the link below and recent email status from John. Competition ends on the 18th. They say they could catch a spanish brown trout over 10 inches !! They are all really smart though.

Hey guys!!
Well we are taking a half day off today. We are having a parade later this afternoon. It looks as though only 21 countries will be represented at this years events. I guess the world economy has everyone a little short on cash (including yourŽs truly).

We have fished 7 or 8 different rivers here in northern Spain thus far. Generally the fish are very small and very difficult to catch. The national record for brown trout is about 15 lbs from what I have been told. The typical fish we have been catching have been about 6-8 inches. They are extreamly spooky too. The bait fishermen have depleted the public rivers to the point that there are very few trout left. Thank God for Catch and Release in the states!!!!

I fell pretty well dialed in at this point. When I competed in Sweden a couple of years ago I was 3 fish from a medal. I had them on the hook but lost them. I guess thats fishing after all. Hopefully, IŽll draw some good beats this year and be able to bring you guys home another medal. IŽm keeping my fingers crossed.

The other guys on the team are the greatest. Jack Dennis from Jackson is our coach and is terrific. Ed Opler is our captain and was on the National Board of trout unlimited. Jeff Currier is one of the best fishermen in the US and runs the Jack Dennis Fly Shop in Jackson Wyoming. Peter Erickson the ESPN Great Outdoor Games Gold Medalist is my roommate and Sam Mavarkrus won the Jackson One Fly. Jay Buchner placed 18th overall in France last year is one of the nations best fly tiers. Walter Ungerman is our reserve angler and is a former Captain of the US team. He is a terrific salmon angler.

All in all I think this may be the strongest team the US has ever had. With a litte luck who knows.

See you guys later.

John

Hey guys............
Jeff Currier of Team USA has taken the Bronze medal here in Spain!!!!!!!! We have finished the higher than any USA team in history. Our total place points put us basicaly tied with the Polish team at 7th/8th.

We had some REALLY tough fishing here. The teams that had no blanks are the ones that won medals. The lake here (lagoŽ) is a virtual biological desert in the middle of the day. One of the rivers has several small streams that enter it from the surrounding communities. The lake produced close to 75% blanks and the Aragon produced about 40% blanks. If you got good beats you caught fish. If you got a bad beat you had to be an exceptional fly fisher to catch even one fish. Jeff was the MAN!!!!

I am packing up to leave tomorrow. We have our medal ceremonies tonight and a huge party. We are all so stoked about the USA winning a medal you canŽt imagine! IŽll tell you guys all about it when I get back. IŽm guiding in the St Jude so IŽll have a short break to catch up before I have to start again. At least at home it doesnŽt cost $2 for internet access per minute.

John

That's great. Just caught this thread. Nice to see the US finally getting up there. Maybe in coming years we'll get the gold.

I think the French won last year per John Wilson hope not this year, Spain would be nice since they stood by us in Iraqi Freedom.
