What critter is the funnest to hunt? new
      #61679 - 06/12/03 09:32 PM

What is your favorite critter to hunt? For me I would have to say stalking Mule Deer. I will never forget my first Idaho mulie. We spotted them from about 1200 yards. They were straight up hill so we hiked down the road about 1000 yards and started our stalk. The weather was perfect, snow blowing in our faces the entire way accross the mountain. when I decided to stop and peak over the ridge, there they were on the oppostie side. I had to lay in the snow for 30 minutes for the biggest one to feed out from behind a big snag. What a thrill it is to just sit there and wait for him to mess up! Well he did, and I shot him. Then I had to watch him tumble almost all the way back to the road I figure it was about 800 yards! Gotta love that rush!

Being a shooter, I like lots of action. My favorite would have to be hunting a corn field that had 1000 geese in the day before. The field is 20 miles from their water source and knowing they will be making a bee line to this field at 9AM. Waiting and watching for the first wave of birds that can be spotted 3 miles away. HERE THEY COME. Take cover. They come to the call readily, and start circling the field as they drop altitude. The decision to pass the first chance at a shot to get them to make one more circle and commit. Wings are set, when you see the landing gear down the heart really starts pumping. TAKE'EM...The heavy double barrel ten guage get's lifted and I know I have all the time in the world to concentrate on a shot because they are pretty much already dead. BOOM...the T shot can be heard ripping one and then it falls. BOOM sometimes I get two. The shoot is over at 11am and we head home for lunch.

Those were the good old days.

Big old flock of about 50 green wing teal doing Mach 2 at grass top level with a 20 mile head wind approaching from behind you. For some reason you turn and look over your shoulder....coffee cup falls on the labs head as you grab for the auto 12 gauge. As soon as you stand up all 50 teal switch from formation flight to every bird for themselves flight. Ain't nothing on earth can do what them birds can do. Some diehard "we only hunt mallards" buddies learned and paid dearly on a long day of that.

Coyotes! Them buggers are smart. To be able to call them in, then not even move when they come into field and then be able to place a good long range shot with a small caliber, oh I think that's just a blast.

Dove shooting can be a lot of fun also. There's an area just outside of Moses Hoe that the birds start flying at 4:30pm and continue for a couple hours. You sit in on a stool and wait for them to do a fly by. The weather is always very hot, so we bring a cooler with ice for the birds and some pops. I take shots at all birds within 40 yards and on a good day have hit 33%. The wind can make shooting really tough as the birds are flying irratic with lots of speed. Lots of fun shooting over a box of shells in a couple hours.

My favorite is a Big Blacktail buck. Nothing like stalking in the rain and wind and trying to outsmart one of these critters. They usually win but the thrill of the hunt is what it is all about for me. Elk are a close second.
