I am learning taxidermy. First fish
      #65926 - 07/16/03 03:28 PM

I could not find a good taxidermist in my area that didnt take 6 months to get it done so I decided to learn it myself. I havent put it on the wood yet but it pretty much done. I think I will get alot better at painting with little practice. This is the nine ten I caught earlier this year.

Hard part sounds like the skinning... rest just takes years of practice to perfect and learn the tricks.

Even though it took me 3 1/2s hour to skin the fish the hardest part was painting it. the rest is just meticuless time consuming work.
For skinning the fish I use a handy tool made for taxidermist called a fish skinniing knife. it has a curved dull serrated blade that allows you to separate the skin from most of the meat, the rest of the meat is scrapped off using a fish skin scraper. You have to be really careful around the fin and gill areas as the skin is pretty thin there. You also have to be carefull not to lose any scales because they bring out the detail of a finished fish. I have been doing alot of reading and may eventually repaint this fish, its not bad but I know I can do better. I got a thirty year jumpstart on the tips and tricks from my teacher but there is no shortcuts in a quality mount which eventually I will offer to everybody including repoductions. I am studying molding and casting techniques right now. some great materials at smoothon.com

right on... you can defineately see the difference between good and bad mounts. Usually in the paint jobs or the head body transition zones!!

I can't believe you guys encouraging him....

Thats the ugliest salmon I have ever seen and since I the doc am certain that other than salmon a steelhead is the only other fish in the NW, I can't imagine how embarassed this poor guy must be. Keep trying though but just remember salmon and steelhead are a black/silver basic color when at their prime...not green/black. boy oh boy.

For you next attempt just look at some of these...it will give you a start on the paint job.

doc...kiddingly...out

Oh by the way...no artistic ability here on this side of the screen.

You crack me up Doc. I will try to do the cutt-bow trout next.

Woodsy there are hog bass just about all the lakes around here. The secret is to fish the less pressured ones and fish in stuff that others usually pass up.
