Pileated Woodpecker
      #68369 - 08/01/03 03:21 AM

The pileated is one of my favorite birds and we are lucky to have them frequent our yard. The other evening we were surprised so see an adult and a fledgling land about 30 feet from us and they spent about 20 minutes having a "how to" session with the parent picking at insects and the baby aping every move. The baby was comical with its baby fuzz sticking up all over its head. I was able to get some pretty good video of it all.

It is pretty relaxing to sit back and watch birds in their natural envornment. Gotta love every opportunity you get.

It's too bad so many people kill them because they bang on thier gutters. That is how they draw mates in the spring so they find the loudest thing they can pound on and go at it. Not many of them left around here.

The baby is on its own now and very "tame", that is not people shy. He likes to hop on the ground and pick up bug and if I sit still he will hop right up to me. At first I thought he couldn't fly but when he wants to he takes of normally. I think he just hasn't been exposed to humans much and hasn't developed "the fear".

These are a cool bird we have many of them in the GLs region love watching them flying around in the spring pecking away on dead trees which they seem to prefer.
