Well it looks like its time to start checking the patches. Rained again this morning so it won't be long. Last weekend I ate lots of blackberries and thimble berries exploring some new fishing spots. Of course I had my eyes open for the fungi and some of the non edibles were popping already.
Will only take on decent saturation rain and picking will be going strong. Weatherman says..

Rain??? What's that? Haven't seen any in my neck of the woods for a long time. All the ferns around here are turning yellow and are dying, never seen it so dry in the woods...

My rule of thumb for early chanterelles has always been to check the lower swamp edges after the first August rain. It doesn't take much to start them off and the earlier dryer ones, although just small buttons, are some of the most flavorful.
It's time to get off my butt and do some hiking.

We were out searching today and found no chantrelles... yet. It was a slight sprinkle rain so those swamp edges could be twitching They claiming rain but I suspect we need a pineapple express to live the forest floor.
We did find some old bolettas sp?

Looked for chanterelles in the usual and accustomed places yesterday. Found no chanterelles, and only one other mushroom. Moss patches were dry. Found moisture in some shady draws, but no fungi. Need a downpour!

As dry as this summer has been I'd bet that just about the whole gammut of summer and fall shrooms are popping.

I will be out again this weekend and it should be a real interesting day if the commercials don't have them picked clean.

Did some power shrooming yesterday... Not tons but a decent basket haul on chantrelles. The forest floor wasn't as wet as could be so some just haven't popped yet.

Those "other" Shrooms grow in the field behind dads house, used to be we knew when they were out by all the flashlights wandering around on the hillside MetaPinks grow in the same field too.

I got out Friday, and my mushrooming partner got out Sunday. Hunting in our usual productive spots, we both found about a dozen small chanterelles. All were just popping through the moss. Hopefully, the rain we're getting today will increase chanterelle size and numbers for this weekend. We are still not finding other fungi in areas where they've always been abundant. Drought must have done them in

Problem I see is the extreme ground saturation hasn't occured so only the areas it got a decent moisture hit sprouted the mushrooms. Ours were mostly smaller but did find a few medium sized ones.

Just remember the really good locations because they will payoff year after year. When we used to pick them and sell them we'd hit the same locations every year until Weyerhauser would log it. Even if it wasn't the exact same spot the surrounding area had the same soil and would payoff.

So where's the K-1000? Just curious. The wife and I just so happen to enjoy a platefull of Chantrelles from time to time. Usually pick 'em where we hunt but not much going on yet. MMMMMMM! can taste 'em already!
