Picking Cones and Mushrooms
      #69792 - 08/12/03 11:13 AM

Anyone else ever do this??
When I was a kid we used to pick cones and sell them and pick Chantrelles and sell them at a mom and pop convenience store.

My mom still stays in contact with the seed buyer but there hasn't been a good cone crop or demand for quite some time. When they do want cones there's none to get and when there's cones they don't have any demand for them.

Mainly picked Douglas Fir, the seed company would tell you what zone they wanted them from and what elevation. These were important for where the seedlings ended up. Couldn't take high elevation seedlings and plant them in low elevation.

We'd start in Sept, head to the zone they wanted and look for where the squirrels had cut them from the trees. After a while you could find zipper locations where there'd always be alot.

Did a little bit of Noble Fir. Squirrels don't cut these so had to send someone up the tree after them. Didn't take many cones to make a bushel with Noble's.

Alot of ours ended up in Germany, Maybe they figured out how to do it themselves and thats why there's no demand.
