I thought this was going to be "one of those" threads. Few things in fishing piss me off more than flyfishing elitists. I fish about 50/50 flies and gear.

So, what's wrong with gear guys? When I fish the Lake Ontario "surf", yeah, I take my fly gear, in case the fish are in close, but yeah, I also take my "insurance" (long-range gear). Some guys just can't be happy without taking swipes at another guy's fun, that's all!

Yes so was I please come back.

Actually I like gear fishers and have found them to be nicer fellows than a lot of the fly fishing types I run into on the rivers.

Its america, fish the way you like, I served four years defending that right, and cherish the freedoms we have because believe me they do not exist in a lot of countries like we have them here when it comes to fishing as well as all of the other freedoms we enjoy.

Actually, it's interesting to see 'gear guys' and new [Re: Steelheader69]
      #70111 - 08/14/03 09:09 AM

fly guys interact here on the upper Rogue. Large part of the fall is fly fishing only on the top 30 miles of the river, but you can use a drift rod/mono and a float. Fly(s) can be weighted, but no extra lead below the float.

For the most part "they" co-exist very well. Major difference (and what seems to tick the fly rodders off) is the gear guy will "camp" in one spot on a run and stay there for hours on end. Little if any movement down a drift.

What ticks off the gear guys (rest of the open season) are fly guys who don't/can't control their fly lines when they're around drift gear. This is one of the major benee's of using a spey rod. You have tremendous line control even in the middle of a group/across from fellows chucking 2 oz of lead and 10' leaders. (Big time thing when the spring kings are running.)

Once they cast, that's it. They have zero control short of reeling in their lines. With a hard upstream mend I can stop my line dead out to about 70 feet. They drift by, I continue with mine. Couple of goes of this and we have 'harmoney' on the river.

Rather doubt I 'tangle' lines more than once or twice during a full day ... and it's my fault. Usually the problem was loosing site (sun angle, lack of attention, etc.)of other fellows line going into the water.

I doubt it's the sun angle that makes you lose site of your line during the summer king run. It's lack of attention. I know about that slot you fish that there's a bunch of sexy co-eds in their skimpy string bikinis who lounge across the way. You lose control of the fly and try a new "wet fly swing" LOL

Forgive me Joan, I'm just kidding. Let Fred come out to play. I'm harmless, I promise.

They seem pretty independent there Jer.

Well, it's better then calling them my "mates". We aren't in England, so makes a big difference.

Doubt they mind. If they do, I hope they'd tell me. But most of the people I call "my guys" are one's that have I have posted with on 4 or so fly boards. So, not like I'm calling them anything bad. But a crew that has been together awhile.

Hey, Fred,

FYI, actually increasing "age" doesn't exactly do much to help our eyesight, you know.

So, in case of bikini-clad sunbathing "co-eds", I generally carry a pair of compact binoculars. Really aids the vision, if you know what I mean!

(A gal once called me a "dirty old man". I responded, "What do you mean, OLD! Who you callin' old!")

Us "seniors" gotta keep passing these tips along. That way, we can't be cut out of all the fun!

Hey Bobk I found some compact camoflauged binocs ($10) at Walmarts hunting department last week along with some Merino wool socks for $ 7. The binocs are going to come in handy as the eye candy goes by in the canoes and LM beaches while surf fishing. Problem is I already have my lanyard, sun glasses, digital camera, hanging around my neck while FF. Adding the binoculars may be too much, I could hang myself out there on something !

I wonder how many pounds I carry around my neck and in the fly fishing vest /

This is getting way out of control, too much stuff.

Hey Jerry you can call me "your guy" as long as we understand it is for FF subjects only.

LOL

The "eye candy" is not existent during fall and winter steelheading season which is when I do the majority of my fishing.

See, Hal -

It's like I keep telling you. That's why you should keep fly fishing for stream trout. There are lots of interesting sights out there, and sometimes the scenery is VERY special.
