Browning Shotgun new
      #63099 - 06/25/03 06:33 PM

I have a Browning shotgun I am trying to find out if anyone knows anything about. It is a double auto (semi-auto 2 shot)28' barrel, ventilated rib. No interchangeable chokes. It is all engraved and has a brown finish instead of blue. Any body know anything about these? Are they rare or worth anything? I heard that it is a skeet gun.

My grandpa uses one just like that for skeet. Other than that I don't know anything.

I know a little about these - sorry for the late response, just noticed it!

Val Browning (a son of the master) designed the gun, called the "Double Auto". It is one of the few (or only) "short-recoil" functioning shotguns made. It wasn't wildly popular, but was produced for quite a few years. (1952 - 1971) for the "twelvette", which is what you have. Approximately 67,000 were made. The receiver for this particular gun was made of Aluminum, and was anodized in different colors. According to the Blue Book, the value runs $250 (60%) to $650 (100%), depending on condition, but the BROWN receiver is a 20% premium on value. If it has a vent rib, add $90 - $100. (Maroon, red and royal blue are worth a lot more!)
The engraving is probably just roll-engraved with the aluminum receiver - as I recall, they did quite a bit of that as a standard feature.

Bob, you are correct. My Father had one of them, has two barrells, the 28 with the vent in full choke and a 26 with mod choke. Pretty shotgun, and handles well. One question I have, to confirm that we are talking about the same shotgun, is that the safety is a mechanical/physical block on the back side of the trigger guard? My Dad's has no monetary value.....it is mine only because he is no longer here with us. Can't put a price tag on something with memories like that in the fields.

Can't tell you much more than I did already. I used the info out of the latest "Blue Book of Gun Values". I also remember the gun well, as a few of the shooters owned them and were very proud of them.
