or, Dog's Alzheimers...
Sad day around our house as we just learned that our dear old Great Dane is suffering from that. Remarkably, it explains why one moment she seems normal and frisky and the next she wanders off like she doesn't even know me and bumps into a wall or gets stuck in the corner of the garage. I guess there is a drug that might help but the alternative I dread is the one that might have to be chosen. My heart breaks to think of it.

Maltby, I feel for you we lost our great dane last september almost a year now. Had her from a pup, she lived for 8.5 years, one big sweetheart she was. Healthy her entire life, my wife thought she was sleeping in her chair all curled up, tried calling her and had no response. She had died in her sleep, her heart just stopped. Sad day for the family.
Well that lasted until Christmas day then the two siberian red husky pups arrived and its been another dog adventure with these guys. There 10 months old now, brothers from the same litter and a real show to watch them interact.
Best of luck with your Dane.

Sorry to hear that Maltby. Our dogs are like members of our families, as I am sure yours is too. I hope you don't have to turn to the alternative method. Good luck. Great Danes are such big beautiful animals.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and support. WE are giving a try to a natural supplement called SAM-E though if things improve, it will likely be slight and short in duration. But I gotta give it a try, ya know?

Sorry to hear about that, as I stated above we lost our Great Dane a year ago this month unexpectedly and were in shock. Waited until Christmas and then got two Siberian Husky Red Pups - brothers from the same litter. Man is our house active with them running around chasing and playing with each other !
Thinking of getting another dog yet ?
Best

Thats too bad.. The next few weeks will be the hardest while you adjust to not having your dog around--It will become less painful as you learn not to expect her physical presence. Dogs are very habitual and they groove with their owners habits so your habits and hers were intertwined. Over the next few weeks you will remember her at those points in your routine that she would normally be there and feel sadness that she is gone. But over time those pangs of sadness will give way to feelings of warmth and fondness at remembering your companionship and the happiness she brought to your life. Hang in there

thanks you guys..you are absolutely right, 3Rvrs. We still have a male Great Dane so that helps, but he is lost without her too. We are thinking about another dog companion for him as soon as we get past this hard part.
