Gonna buy another front stuffer and was looking in cabelas..All that cabelas has is the 209 ignition muzzle loaders  For the state of washington that wont work..Whats up with that? wonder if WDFW will change laws soon?

its a constant fight with the state and muzzleloaders. need to have that open cap... I have a tc thunderhawk that meets the requirements for now.

Hey, guys, go traditional SIDELOCK! That way, you can have your choice of standard 10's or 11's, musket "top hats", or a "rock lock" if you REALLY want to be sporting.
I still use all of the above, and still think these "newfangled" models and changes are just to sell more guns, and to avoid gun care. But the old designs STILL work well, and I have taken a lot of deer with them. (I was "issued" a buck and two doe tags this year.)

I have an old hawkin kit gun that I have had for 25 years but never hunted with it..Its a right hand percussion not a flint lock..Legal to hunt in this state but weighs a freeking ton!

If Timber is complaining about the weight it must be heavy. Do some stock modification to it. If there is enough there. A buddy of mine bought an old beat up .270 that was a massive gun until his dad got ahold of it. He carved off alomost half of the wood. It really made a great rifle.

I once built a little half-stock percussion .45 which weighs exactly 5 lbs. loaded. I take that on hunts "Back in" so I don't have to drag a ton of gun with me. Biggest problem was finding a barrel light enough, other than that it was all stock "slimming". Unfortunately, they don't make that barrel anymore - said they sold too few of 'em. I dunno - I love the gun, it looks traditional, and it's taken every deer it's been fired at!

Check to see if they have conversion kits for standard and musket caps available.
I have two rifles, a CVA "pimp gun" that has all of the polished brass and is the standard .54 cal Hawken design. The stock design, curved butt, results in a fair amount of discomfort using 100 grains of FFg and a 425g Great Plains bullet, but it has killed two elk and 2 deer.
My main gun is a T/C Thunderhawk, also in .54 cal. It is one of those stainless guns, sythetic stock, peep, etc. Shoots as well as the Hawken, but with the same load it is a lot better on the shoulder because of the stock angle, design, and recoil pad.
In the Redhead catalog they had a T/C Black Diamond XR that uses all three ignition systems, but they only show it in .50 cal. Page 376.

I love .54s. Good, accurate rifles with LOTS of energy. Only problem here in NY was that you had to use round balls, which I did, in a 32 - inch slow twist rifle. Shot GREAT and I killed lots of deer with it. No questions. But the darn rifle weighed in at over 10 lbs. That's why I built the little 5-pound .45. Yeah, it kicks fierce with a hefty load, but is plenty accurate, and kills deer well. They changed the law, and now sabots are permitted, so it's a nice light gun for me to tote around the woods.

My only reason is to apply for the big bull permit in an area I know that gets less applicants then tags for elk.. I wont be using it for deer! I have an area I hunt every year modern that gives me my big buck every year..

Did some more research and found out I can get new breech plugs for #11 and musket cap along with the 209..

That's great! Only problem is it doesn't take any weight off the smokepole, though!
