I've been wanting to get into taxidermy for a while, and recently, a great opportunity presented itself to me- I was chatting with my biology teacher about his taxidermied fish on the wall, and how I was able to recognize one of them as being a fiberglass replica and not a skin mount, and he thusly noticed my interest, and asked if I had done any taxidermy myself. I replied that I hadn't yet, but was very interested in it, and had done some reading on it. He then said (much to my surprise) that he had a bird in the freezer, and if I wanted to mount it, he would give me extra credit for doing so! So I now have a frozen small hawk of some kind at my disposal, and am a bit confused on the steps to be taken. Can anybody help me out here? Thanks

Uhhh...first thought is that birds of prey are not legal to have in your possession let alone do any taxidermy work. My first call would be to WDFW and find out if any permits are required.

After checking into it with the WDFW, it looks like there should be no legal problems, I just need to put send in an application for a salvage permit, which is pretty much guaranteed to go through since it's for eduacational purposes. I'm still looking for any online instruction, though, so if anybody out there has some info, I'd still greatly appreciate it.

Thanks Marsha, that's the type of stuff I was looking for I also stopped by the library on the way home today and picked a book up which shows how to do it all step by step- I should have thought of that sooner (duh- lol) looks like the taxidermy shouldn't be too hard from what I've read. I'll post pics as I go once I get started

Cool! I noticed many videos for sale also. I am the type that likes learning that way as I seem to remember details more.
