OK Bob and BlackGhost, didn't you just contradict each other? I'm so bad at casting I look like Gerald Ford trying to do Riverdance. Although my roll casts are pretty decent for close in work.
How to 'push/pull' the rod top in a line without arcing the 10-2?
I really need a teacher on this bug tossing gig.

Hey, I'm self taught. I'm not bad, but I'm not good at casting either. I find I cast better when I'm not thinking about it. The more I think, the worse I cast actually. I always do one too many false casts because I want the perfect cast. I rarely get wind knots anymore. Sometimes, but rarely. Thank god. LOL But, it did help when I started to watch my casting stroke. Gave me an idea when to let the rod load and do the forward cast. Then, just built that memory into my arm. Sometimes I slouch a bit. But usually when I'm thinking about it. LOL. If I get the fly on target without snapping/windknot, I'm happy.

How did Hal and I contradict each other? I must have missed it. (Could be!)
Anyway, no, I never had lessons. Yeah, I learned to cast to toss a worm upstream to a fish and to mend line for a drag free drift. This was before spinning rods, and my teacher was my great uncle when I was 7 or 8. It was called "fishing with a purpose" (to bring home protein).
I subsequently learned, on my own, how to fish with flies and cast flies. Yeah, for short casts, I don't move my arm - I just "wrist cast" - and it amazes folks, because it's "all wrong" in their "rule" book. BUT IT WORKS FOR ME, AND WELL!
But for longer casts, certain rules do apply, and moving your rod tip in a straight path is one of them.
And remember one thing - you don't have to be the world's longest caster! A short, accurate cast will put you "on the money" more often than longer, less accurate casts. If you don't believe that, talk to some of the people I have fished with.
Also, remember that fly fishing and casting was devised to cast a plain fly and leader, not weighted, without lead added, without strike indicators or bobbers, no "Korkys", etc. That's why we have to "play" with technique more than the stream trout fishers do.
(In fact, originally there was no reel, and no rod guides - just strands of horse tail hair tied to each other, "tapered" (less strands) towards the "angle" (hook), tied to a rod tip and to a hook fashioned from a bent needle.) And we think we've got it tough today!
Just go out and have fun - technique will come with practice, and you get that by going out, doing it, and having fun.

Bobk and I contradict each other, well thats possible, always go with Bobk's wisdom he is older and more experienced than I.
I like Bobk also never took a fly fishing lesson in my life, self taught since 12 years old, 44 years this month.

Wow, both of you are self taught too. I know where I'm heading now. LOL I too started fishing for adding extra protein into the family diet. Plunking wasn't bad, but hated when we meatlined out in Puget Sound. Great way to catch fish, but you yard arm the fish in like a winch. Became more fun once I got a bit older, and we switched to downriggers more (we used them occasionally). Was able to play the fish up. Then, around 11/12 I switched to using a fly on occasions. Rest is history for me.
And Bob, nice history lesson. Make this an educational fly fishing site. Actually, I've thought about doing little tidbits on old flyfishing facts. Have enough books here to go through. Always something fun and interesting to learn once

It's trolling with metal line off a heavy action rod. Normally running flashers with a spreader bar running gear. When the fish hits, it's usually set hard. Won't go anywhere. Still have my original meatline rod up on my ceiling. Extremely effective way to fish, but it's only good if you want fish only. No play at all. Like fishing with a broomstick.

Hal and Bob, I mis-read the posts. My brain was being too literal. I was thinking a straight line (like a vector)at the tip, not an arc in a straight line. I like the mental imagery of the push/pull on the grip though.
Practice Practice Practice. Time to use my backyard again....

No problem, I am a bad teacher anyway. Here is a good site for info on fly fishing and fly casting.
Practice as much as you can in moving water, in other words a river of some size.

The one thing nobody talks about is that you should have FUN! If you aren't, and take it all too seriously, then you are doing something wrong.
Oh, I like Patrick McManus quotes, as well. Hal doesn't ever quote stuff like this, his stuff is more classic, but I do. Two of the McManus quotes that I remember are:
"The best times to go fishin' are when it's rainin', and when it ain't".
and
"Smoked Carp tastes just like smoked Salmon... when you ain't got no smoked salmon."
Now, how can you say it any better than that.

I will see if I can get to the barrier dam on Weds next week, if the Chinooks aren't in too bad bringing out all the line crackers I may be able to try moving water
I think I am too much of a perfectionist, I see my loops get tight and yet they still "almost" go closed, but not quite.. then I start dropping the rod tip too much on the backstroke and stop the forestroke too late and everything goes to heck in a handbasket and I end up untangling every cast. I know it's not supposed to do this, but if I try to "push" and "pull" I end up with a sore shoulder after about 10 minutes..

Buzzy, I've found you have to have a "feel" for your rod. If you slow down, you can feel the rod load. Once you feel that loading (if you look back the rod bends back, and line straightens out) you'll know it's time to pull forward. I'm not the best caster in the world, but can hold my own.
Oh yeah, sorry, was hoping you may have made it to the get together this weekend. Been busy getting that ready. Will have a "kit" together for you this week and give you final approval.

It was small (only 3 of us) but was a good time. Drank some beers, tied some flies, had a BBQ. It was great. Was hoping you may have been there. But I understand why you didn't. Maybe next time? If you head into the Guild, I posted some pics.
