I am from the Great Lakes and have shared this site with some sites back there. The salmon and steelhead fishing can be great on the big lakes and steams and they can new tricks to try there. The guides might get some fishermen from back there looking for some west coast stream trips. Steve

Cool, GLs report forumn heres the report from Fridays trip.
Fished the St Joseph river in SW Michigan. Salmon and summer steelhead are in the river. The runs have just begun. Spey fly fished with nymphs, streamers, snakes, and show girl marabou cone heads. Went 2 for 5 on kings thought I was going to get , but rallied in the 4th quarter, found a nice school of bright kings at the Forks Pool waiting for the next rise in water from the dam.
Hot flies were white bunny strip smelt streamer and White Snakes, yes I said Snakes. Lost my two white ones though on a king and a snag. Now I have to tie more of those labor intensive snakes !
Oh well good day on the river lots of spey casting experience, again I was the only fly fisher in this popular stretch of the river. Looks like I outfished the gear guys always a good feeling, they were asking me for the fly I was using.
Gave one nice gear fellow one he told me he was fully disabled and then I gave him one of the kings I landed. This guy looked more fit then me so maybe I was taken in by BS?
Oh well, in the link below is a couple of pictures of the fish and me and one of the flies sent in for the current Washington Fly Fishing sites steelhead swap. Its a Rusty Claret Squirrel pattern modification of a squirrel tail streamer I lost one of my biggest steelheads on about 15 years ago on the PM of course. Still remember the sight of that big wild PM buck jumping what seemed to be 6 feet out of the water with my squirrel tail in its mouth on its way back to Lake Michigan.
Well got the salmon out my system now will be looking for the October summer and Michigan strain winter steelhead runs.

Nice shots Hal. What bridge is that in the background? Doesn't look wide enough to be the 94. Next time I visit my brother in Detroit, we should try to get some river time. I'm thinking of using one of my timeshare weeks for an 'multiple generations' fishing trip for my Dad's 75th in 2 yrs. I'll have to check the book, but I know there are several places in MI. Because of school, we're limited to summer months. What's the best time frame for us gear-chuckers? Who knows, in two yrs, I might actually learn how to cast a fly properly.

Not the 94 bridge, 20 miles upstream from there, Rt 31 bridge.
There are steelhead or salmon in the Michigan rivers 12 months of the year in a number of rivers. I don't know the east side Michigan rivers flowing into Lake Huron only the west side rivers flowing into Lake Michigan.
Basically there is trout, salmon, and steelhead fishing 7X24 in Michigan. Always can find something open with fish in it. Best time though overall is the fall (Sept - Nov) in my opinion.
Let me know if you come out.

Yeah - unfortunately the GL tribs fish best from late Sept. through about May 1st, at least here on Lake Ontario. SOME rivers (The Salmon in NY, and the Sault St. Marie in northern MI for a couple) have some limited fishing for "landlocked" Atlantic Salmon during the summer. The Mich. tribs that I have read about have runs of Skamania then, too, but I believe that is in Western MI.

I guess I can help in this form. At this point most of the rivers and streams are just about done with the Salmon spawning run and the Steelhead are just now moving back into the rivers. There are some reports of steelhead being caught off the peirs and river mouths. hope this helps
Thanks OSD.

Yep Steelhead are in or entering most of the rivers. I saw a couple last friday, but no intercepts for me. Lake run browns will also be entering in November.
We are suppose to get our first snow flurries here in Tuesday so that means it is really starting.
First week of November has always been my starting date for Fall steelhead runs. Rivers clear out as many fisherman switch to hunting great time of the year.
