The first time I saw the beach all lit up with lanterns for miles I was in awe. For those who haven't tried a night dig, I highly suggest it. One person holds the lantern, the other digs.

Wayne,

A clam gun, which you can make out of PVC or aluminum pipe 4 1/2 or 5 inches in diameter. It's basically a tube, with thumb hole in the top and a handle welded or bolted on. The idea is....

Find a "show" or clam hole in the sand. Place the gun over it. Push it into the sand. Usually 18 inches or so. Cover the hole in the top of the gun, and pull the gun out. (suction) Uncover the hole (no more suction) and let the sand and clam drain out. Place clam in bucket, and fill in the hole in the sand. Move to next "show". Keep every one no matter how broken or small though!

And to think you will be so close to open areas this Sunday. Perhaps you could borrow my two clam guns and try it later that night?

Oh yeah, some people use clam shovels, of which we also have, but don't like for razors. Yeah, some old guys swear by them.

That's the simple part. Cleaning is another matter. But I can explain that to you better in person.

Here is the important part. Your culinary ability is especially good for razor clams.

I bet you could create some pretty awesome stuff with them! Most folks like to dip them in egg and seasoned crumbs, then pan fry lightly. They can get "chewy" though.

Maybe Jeffhead would let you tag along even?

Pan fried razors and tartar sauce.... OK, now I am hungry!

Wayne, if you want, show up at my house (17 south 2nd street, Pacific Beach) Sunday night and I'll show you how. I got shovels & lanterns, you just need a license and boots/waders. I'm leaving Pacific Beach about 6:00pm to be at Ocean Shores a couple of hours prior to low water to beat the tourists with clam guns, kinda like yellow fishing poles...sorry Marsha
could this be the first clamtilla?????

Where can I get one of those yellow rods again?

This brings up another question though. Do clam guns work better on some beaches than others? I know on some Oregon beaches they are preferred and what we always used to use.

What makes me wonder is... when digging mud shrimp in Newport, RJ swears a shrimp gun (actually more like a bicycle pump) works much better and will out dig a clam gun 4-1. When I talked to Reel_nut about digging in the Westport area, he said he tried both also and shrimp guns don't work very well. We tried both anyway, and indeed the clam gun did work better.

So my question is.... Gooose dear, is there enough of a difference in sand/mud composition to make one work better than another and the opposite be true somewhere else?

PS, this condition of "thinking about stuff" is a result of hanging out with Marty for a while last weekend. He should be wearing some sort of warning label.

Clamming was great last night! Big clams, no lanterns needed! The weather was great, and we were even treated to an awesome sunset! We got there 2.5 hour before low tide and there were people leaving with limits when we pulled up! There were 8 of us, and we were done in an hour and a half. The down side is that I've been cleaning all morning... big clam fry tonight! lots of Guiness too!

No Biggie, I had Chicken Fried Steak.....
and played in the sprinkler and pool with the dog...

and washed the boat, and mowed the yard, and mounted a few wall mount pot/pan holders.

Blew the dust off the Ranger, cleaned a few windows, and cleared all my shiat out, they are repaving for the next 3 days... You Bet!! I had some fun.......

Yeah...it worked...I'm jealous....

So the report from Ocean City last night was 2 limits that took an hour and a half to dig. Some nice clams and some that were small. Quite a few folks on the beach but from what I was told by a friend not near as many as Friday or Saturday. First time I had dug by latern, quite the sight, lanterns for as far as you could see in both directions.

Forgot my gear when I got down to my Dad's place. Figures. Oh well, maybe next time. Isn't there digs scheduled in October?

Grew up clam digging. Grandparents had property on the beach at Copalis. So did alot of clamming. My Grandpa was a fanatic. Got his wish. Literally died while digging his limit.

But I'm a try and true shovel user. And I ONLY surf dig. No thumping for me (hate them thumpers driving the clams down). Most I get in first shovel full. Wish I could've made it with the kids. Would've been a fun time. I love night digs. We have the posts you drive in that hold the lanterns. Hold really good. But about dead now. Not stainless. LOL. But have friends who are using some of the nice high intensity beamed headlamps for clamming. From what I've seen, makes surfdigging awesome. Once my shoulder heals, I'll be more then 100% ready for it. I do second Andy though, nothing cooler then a night dig.
