9/27 Rain and Lake Ontario tribs...
      #76829 - 09/27/03 06:41 PM

Well, the cold front came through, leaving behind 1/2 (west) to 2 inches (Rochester and east) of rain behind. This will be coupled with very cool days (and downright cold nights) for the next week or two. This should get the fish in a running mood! Gotta go out and catch the streams tomorrow AM to see how high they are. Looks like a good week of fishing for me - air straight out of Alberta and the Canadian rockies!

THIS should be the kickoff!

I normally don't take the camera along. It's a "jinx"! Every time I don't have it along, I catch some biggies, and have a good day. When I do take it, I can't buy a fish! (Who says fishermen are superstitious??)

Besides, the "war department" raises hell if I take the digital. Can't win!

Well, the rain and cold should get the initial salmon runs started. Then, in about three weeks, the big browns come in. Then, usually mid November, the steelies start. That's the "local" timetable. But the Salmon River already has chinooks, some coho and a few steelies in it.

Went up to the Salmon R. Sept. 10th when the runs first started (to avoid the mobs), and went 2 for 3 on chinooks.

Well, had a FROSTY morning - first of the fall so far. A little wet snow (no accumulation) in the hills just south of us.

The main runs are just starting on the Salmon R. - some days, guys are jumping for joy with the hook-ups, other days they are grumbling. Unfortunately, the posts are full of reports about snaggers and lifters - they are a major problem, as snagging was allowed and ENCOURAGED by the state for a number of years. This was outlawed only a few years back, but too late - they had enforced the habit! And bad habits die hard. It's amazing to see the number of salt water rods in use.

Oh, well, I'll just take a little time off until deer season starts - by then, the salmon runs will be over, and the steelies and browns will be in - and the snaggers leave.

It will still be crowded, but with SPORTSMEN!

For now, I'll just bide my time, and fish a few unpublicized small tribs. More privacy, solitude, and the colors of Fall in the Northeast are UNMATCHED! Not as many fish, but one or two hookups a day is fine, and it's a VERY short drive - a few minutes, not hours.

Good fishin, guys!

Fall colors are now coming in the western GLs. Rivers are low but fish are in most rivers or at their mouths. Temps went into the twenties last night highs in 60s the next few days rain friday and saturday will help. Lake Michigan surface temps are in the 50s the time is here to hit the surf also. See surface temp link below.

The best andramous fishing in the GLs is here for the next two months.

Go getem fellows.

Hey Bobk I saw another big article on the awesome NY Ontario LRB fishing in one of the major fly fishing mags this week. The editor of this magazine stated that if he had one day to try and catch a number of andramous fish out of the whole WORLD he would pick a GLs river probably in Michigan and named one in particular which is one you know I fish regularly. I am not going to tell which one it is you will have to find it in the magazine or contact me off line.

Get those new egg pattern hooks sharpened !

Why travel to MI when I can catch all I want HERE! (Just another couple of weeks, and it will start! (God, I love catching those big brownies in spawning colors!) It's as much fun as catching chrome. Now I think I have an idea what it must be like catching "seeforellen" in Europe!

I told you about that one particular good stream - and it will be starting, soon! Probably see that guy I met from Colorado again - he makes it an "annual pilgrimage" for the fishing.

Best part is that they will hang around after spawning, and some of them even "winter over" in the streams. So you never know whether the next fish will be "golden" or "chrome".

Oh forget to mention the editor stated the lake ontario tribs as another prime Gls location. That magazine is Fly Rod and Reel current issue. Check it out big article on your LRB fishing. They say 5-7 lbs are nothing when there are 20lbers to be had.

Maybe I should take a run out there instead of MI in November ? If it gets real good shoot me a PM or to my personal email.

Got to get one of those 20 LB GL LRBs in a picture of me releasing it.
