your opinion...crappy eggs?
      #77795 - 10/03/03 08:18 PM

was out today on brewer's zipper river...now brewer puts up some primo eggs, this i openly admit. hooked a 25# hen nook on eggs and began torelease her. as i was releasing her i told her i understood her craving for brewers eggs and that she needed to go spawn quickly and make more hoggies. i began to notice pocketts of steelhead hugged tight to the opposite bank. fished them hard, with the huh, killer eggs and barely hooked two. now brewer was able to watch and study their behavior and it was very obvious that they where not likey very much my eggs. switched to a jensen egg and a tuft of pink yarn and whammo! instant fish. i hit 6 steelhead in that hour! i know a steelhead will hit these rubber fakes readily but this was over whelmingly a big success. why would a fish be so willing to take a fake over killer eggs?

Brewer I will never give up your zipper up but it was good to see you today. The one thing I have learned is that one cure will not work for all fish. Diff cure for salmon than steelies. Back to the drawing boards for you.
PS got the snoppy pole for you. Looks good!

pro cure no good in my opinion for steelies, salmon love it, if you want a good steelie egg cure id try straight borax or the classic 1 cup salt, 1 cup sugar, 1 cup borax to 4 cups water, add scents as needed. Bring above to a boil, once cool to the touch toss in eggs, leave the eggs in the cure for hour depending on size of eggs, take out of brine leave on counter for 1 day or until desired firmness,
store in borax and freeze
steelie candy

Brewer, six steelhead in an hour is pretty impressive. I like to think I did my part by not hurting their lips when I was with you. Of course I still think I could have done better if you had let be take that stupid blindfold off! I still don't know why I wasn't supposed to see the inside of your van.

I do appreciate you taking me out for the day and showing me the ropes. At least I finally got to see a steelhead on the bank. And thanks to The RTLees for showing me a "downriver bright" king. I will always keep my spinning reel on top now.

The lizard is agreeing with the sinsation on this one. I use the 321 cure for steelies, works great and is reeeeell cheap.

Could it be profile, colour and or scent? How did the size of the real egg cluster compare to the Jensen egg/wool?(Jensen egg combo probably smaller?)Was the colour different? Were they fresh out of the jar, anise scented Jesen's? Last winter I experienced sort of the same thing. On the Chilliwack/Vedder the steelies would slobber all over my orange Pro-Cure eggs/peach wool.On the Chehalis they would not touch it(even going tiniest cluster I could manage on a #4 hook)But they would hit (even chase!)a small single orange anise scented Jensen egg.Brewer's eggs just fine.Brewers brain good too.You realized what you were doing wasn't working and changed up instead of

nice adjustment brewer..fish can as finicky as a cat. Sometimes you just need to keep switching until you find the key to the lips. spoonman is right on the money too... could have been any one of the above or presentation. Light conditions on the water can also effect the situation.

I have seen many a fish swim away with me still scratching my head for a clue.

heres the digs
there were kings, silvers and steelhead in a realatively small but fast riffle.
the eggs were procure red, clusters the size of a quarter.
the jensen eggs were pink. how ever have hit them with orange too.
these are the same eggs that cowlitz winter fish readily bite when i'm out with fishnfool.
have hit summer steelhead last year with them too. a guy i took from work got his first steelhead ever his second morning out after graveyard shift in those eggs. when the rtlees and i met up with steeldreamer, the steelhead he mentioned took the same eggs exactly the week before from the very same spot.
very strange huh, but will be honest and say that i have watched enough steelhead dodge my eggs that i think something is amiss with them. i will also admitt that i proccess them to target salmon... here lies the problem huh? i guess i'll just need to quit tossing those eggs on the hook till the salmon are in full throttle spawning mode.
bama thank you for not devolging brewers zipper river, owe you a six pack of IPA.

the river was very low as to be expected, some of them were very brite with just a hint of chrimsom on the gills. there was also one that was so very dark in almost looked like a nook. i released the three i landed. had several more go ape shiat on brewer then said seeya! there was an olman who also lost several because of the ape thing. the water was very swift in this drift when the rains come this will once again be db turf. i failed to mention that i also had several nooks take the jensen egg, the 1141 yella rod handled them superbly. brewers big frustration was the strech of water was a snaggy mofo! it had brewer on the ropes several times thinking is it worth it? then i'd find another target, toss to the missile, watch the take and have the missile go ape shiat on me, yea its worth it!

Try ussing the same size pieces of roe as the jenson egg.
good luck

catcher, brewer has multipersonality syndrome, this is very confidential am going to ask that you not share this with any else from this board... ok...what is 3rd person talk? anyways i already stated that even though the water is low and clear there are silvers and some still very decent nooks rolling by. i like catching fish so why not use that size bait, something will take those eggs eventually. am using next to zero weight , the eggs are basically the weight, remember very brutally snaggy.there for scalling down eggs the tossing effect sucks. gotta go catch seahawk game is on.

I think it is a combo of a few things...crappy eggs, fishing in frog water, casting into the trees and or telephone lines, using 30 lb weight line, splashing the water when you fall, etc.

When you can improve your actual fishing...maybe you can get those fish to bite on your crappy eggs.
