They are all tucked in their beds, mostly cows and calves, but there were at least 4 legals in the bunch. Biggest one was a little 5x5, but there was one blonde guy in the trees I couldn't get a good look at. Hopefully we'll have pictures for you tomorrow.
Best of luck to you all!

Well,
Here is an example of how scouting really works. We saw these elk over the past month, keeping tabs on their movement on a weekly basis. This week I have been leaving for work early (scout before work), taking LONG lunch hours to locate them, and I put them to bed last night.
This bull took two shots to the chest from 50 to 80 yards, ran about 1/2 mile, swam across a river, took another hit to the foreleg, walked 150 yards, layed down, and took two other solids hits before expiring. This was one tough raghorn. Unfortunately, this was also the first animal I ever had to quarter before taking it out. He isn't huge, but being my first bull it is a trophy to me.
How'd you guys do?
P.S. Must have been the hat.

That is awesome, a bull is a bull is a bull in my book. If your lucky enough to get a trophy size then it is a wallhanger as you may never get another chance at a trophy again. I didn't hunt much the last couple of years, but plan to do some more the next couple of years. I don't mind missing deer season, but can't take another year of not chasin the Elk.

1 1/4oz 3" Federal Hydroshock slugs (firearms restriction zone). One lung was punched with the first shot, second shot hit the chest high above the lungs, but other than punching a hole through the elk, it caused no damage. Third shot broke the right fore leg above the joint. Fourth shot punched both lungs, and finally on the 5th shot I hit it in the neck. Never had that happen before. I am glad I left the ML at home that day, I would not have had enough time to put the extra shots on that animal.
This is the first big animal that ever took more than 5 seconds to bring down. Happens some times. If it hasn't happened yet to you, you haven't shot enough game.

Dogfish: you Quoted
"If it hasn't happened yet to you, you haven't shot enough game."
I hate to break your heart but I’ve been hunting Elk for 18 years know, and I’ve bagged out all but 5. I’ve gotten my deer every year, but one in the last 19. I've bagged 4 bear, 3 antelope, 2 bobcats, 2 cougars, 2 foxes and to many coyotes to count. So don’t give me that crap all one shot kills. I don’t just shoot. I kill. I practice continually so I don’t have to put so many holes in an animal. IMO you should’ve used your ML it has the proper velocity to drop an animal of that size. The recommended Velocity to stop any big game is 1200fps. The 50 cal ML with 50 ff charge will produce 1276fps and 814pounds of energy the 3” load you used produces 974 with 616 pounds see the ML would do the trick a lot better. the shotgun slug was made for deer, I would never feel comfortable in using one on elk. One shot to the lungs and or heart, and start tracking after 30 min just like bow hunting. But that is still a nice kill and enjoy it you earned it. AIX

Woody, (AIX)
I'm not trying to give you any crap, but you need to get your facts straight.
I shoot a .54 cal ML using 390 grain Hornady Great Plains bullets ahead of a 110 grain black powder equivalent charge of 777. This gives the bullet about 1275 fps and 1400 fpe (foot pounds energy) at 50 yards. I don't shoot balls, but I know nobody who would load only a 50 grain charge of FFg with any load when headed out for elk.
My shotgun load, per the manufacturer data, shows my 550 grain slug, yes 550 grains, moving out at about 1320 fps at 50 yards producing over 2100 fpe.
A .30-06 at 50 yards is in the range of 2700 fps and 2650 fpe with a 180 grain bullet, just for comparison.
It was enough gun, much more than my ML, just didn't hit enough bone (knicked a few ribs is all) or damage the vitals heavily enough with the first two shots. That's all. Just trying to show a bit of humility. I also tracked the animal down, across a river, to make sure the job was done right.
There is limited hydrostatic shock caused by both ML bullets and shotgun slugs. This is a function of their low relative velocity when compared to centerfire rifles. There are a few reasons I choose to shoot the methods I do. The first is that is takes more skill to get within 50 yards of elk, I like shooting open sights, the area I hunt requires that you don't use centerfire rifles, and because there is less hydrostatic shock, there is much less meat damage, even if you punch the shoulder.
Sounds like you have a similar success ratio, I've downed 6 elk in 9 years and am 14 for 14 on deer. Only one bear to my credit, but well over 30 coyotes. This was the toughest animal I ever met, it just wouldn't go down.
Welcome aboard!
Andy

Yups Andy I would have gone with the slug gun in that hunt.....better to have quick backup shots than a powder guns single shot.....and more than enough killen power. A hunter can go 30 years and not run into an animal that doesn't fall the first shot....but it happens. Nice kill in my book .

Kid bit me
Shooting an animal 5 times with inadequate gun is not good hunting.
Ive been told that my facts are wrong I haven’t killed enough animals and all that my post gets deleted wen I cover my self.
he** most you guys don’t even realize that in a gun restricted area you can still use hand guns there only for hi powered riffles so no I wont lighten up use the correct velocity and have some respect for the animal you shoot. Aix

. Dogfish quoted “I'm not trying to give you any crap, but you need to get your facts straight”. Ok where do you get your facts the box?
Try buying a crony and test that round you will see different.
My facts are straight the Ml facts came from the complete black powder handbook of charges and velocities. And shooting and testing my self. shot gun facts. The reloading for shotgunners 4th editions and my shotgun facts and testing of reloads.
I’ll tell you rite know that the ML would’ve dropped that elk. If the bullet is put in the right place. Not to be a jerk but, I’m sorry to say if you were only 50 yards away from him, you need to practice. Not to get in a pissing contest but that is the truth YOU ARE THE ONE bragging about shooting it 5 times. That’s just wrong. I hope you get this before they delete it again. As I sed the last time I have the data and would be glad to share it with you but don't belittle my knowledge and expect me to shut up, it won't happen you worked you ars off and I commend you for that but in all onisty shooting an animals leg and popping 4 more rounds in it, is not very cool. I’m glad you got your first, and I hope you get many more. I just hope you don’t have to shot it more than once. If you would like give me a call I’m not trying to belittle you in any way just trying to help. Aix
