I usually dont have a problem getting a buck, but this year has been difficult, its not because of lack of effort, just lack of seeing antlers. I am going into Vail tree farm tomorrow, with probably every other hunter in western washington and wondering if anyone has any ideas how I can get the upper hand, on a buck. Im not hunting for antlers just venison. these blacktails, are being a little fussy this year for me, its not because of lack of effort or knowledge, I grew up close by, walking distance, I know every good area, but this year tough for me, I know there are alot of good hunters on this board, and I need some help. Thanks. Clay, Ill report tomorrow.

Ever try rattling? Scent cover works good too. My number one piece of advice though is too get there early and wait for the other hunters to spook deer to you. By early, I mean earlier than everyone else.

FM, I too will be in the "combat zone" tomorrow morning. With the weather that's supposed to be coming in tonight and tomorrow the deer should be moving. The place that I've hunted today and yesterday had bucks moving in the rut so hopefully they'll be rutting in Vail too. If they are it'll be a bloodbath.
For Blacktails up there think fringes, they won't be out in the middle of the clearcuts, but right on the edges. If the wind starts blowing good, find yourself a road that splits tall timber and a clearcut, if there's obvious sign of travel between the two just post up and watch the travel lanes. Those deer don't like being in the timber if it starts blowing hard and will move out into a clearcut.
Other than that I have a few nice spur roads that I'll park my rig in the middle of and walk down into. With the road blocked they won't be as spooked by the roadhunters. Don't forget to hunt the tall timber, there are always trails that parallel the road that are set in about 50 yards, they will be moving if, and that's a big if, we get some weather. If not you'll have to go get them out of bed...
Another tip, think 2090 area
Sure Vail is like fishing Blue Creek, but when you just want to put some meat in the freezer it's the place to go...
I'm sick of hunting, I want to go fishing...
