Donation of old stuff to High School Fly Club new
      #84974 - 11/17/03 12:55 PM

Hello everyone,
I have created a fly fishing club at Bainbridge High School. There are about 30 members many of which have never fly fished. I am just trying to get used equipment so I can teach the guys and girls how to cast and fish. If you have any used or old equipment that could help, we would really appriciate your help. Some of the more advanced want to learn fly tying. I am willing to teach all of them whatever they want to learn, but I need the equipment and materials to teach them. Please donate what you can it is for the greatest of causes (Kids) our future and the future of fly fishing.
Thanks,
Josh

Please mail anything you can afford to give to the following address. Thanks for all your help.

I'll see what I have....whats the time line and the pipeline? I've definitely got a selection of hooks...sorry they are not identified as to make and size as they are just an accumulation of 30 years.

Hey Gooose, anything would help. I'm going to help with the flytying aspect. Gonna see what I can arrange. But anything helps. Josh would know the exact timeline. But not sure if it's a rush for the flytying stuff. More on the gear for kids to learn on.

Hey Josh. Fred on here made a suggestion for you to check out. You may have missed his post. He's a great guy, and really good about helping in these type of things. Check out his post here (fredaevans). Talking about making your organization a certain type of charity that he can get funds for.

I talked to the school about the tax form. They said since it is a school and not a nonprofit organization, they could not provide the tax form, which has been killing me because a few people have said they would donate if I could give them the form.

Josh - As I mentioned in another post, we need a "statement of purpose". Is it to teach kids steelhead fishing, or a "general flyfishing" class? I have some old equipment (but in top shape) that I could spare - a couple of 6-weight flyrods, a couple of reels to match, lines to go with them, etc. But would this stuff be useful??

Josh, hope you don't mind me answering this for you. Bob, from speaking to Josh and seeing his "manifesto" so to speak, it's a general flyfishing class. Not just steelheading. It'll be one actually to cover all aspects of the sport of flyfishing. Including conservation, flytying, etc. So it's a well rounded club that will cater to all aspects of the sport. I'm sure he could use the 6wts.

Snagly,
Thank you so much. That was overly generous. Snagly you are truly a great fly fisherman passing knowledge onto the next generation. Thank you.

Hey, Josh... new [Re: West_Sound]
      #86349 - 11/25/03 04:27 AM

I haven't forgot about you. I am having a hard time finding a suitable "shipping tube" for the fly rods... as soon as I do, you will be receiving two 6-wt. rods (one 8 1/2 footer, one 9 footer), and a couple of reels (one with an extra spool.) A couple of slightly-used lines, as well.

The rods are a "medium" action and are perfect for teaching casting. One of the lines is "striped", with alternating white and black markings on it so a caster can easily watch the performance of their casting on the backcast - perfect for "newbies". (I have used these to teach kids how to cast.)

I have been hitting up local fly shops, and fishing dealers for the containers they receive their rods in, but so far, no luck.

Will get 'em to you as quick as I can.

BobK

Bob,
You are the greatest. Thank you so much. Once I get them I will be able to hold small casting practice/lessons after school. Thanks for the help.

Josh, good news! Joe, from "Up The Creek" (local fly shop) called me today and told me that he will be getting some rods in on 12/2. He will have a suitable shipping container for me, and will call me as soon as he gets them unpacked. (Too bad we don't live closer - I am sure he would donate something, if it could lead to some future customers.) Then, as soon as I get them safely packed, they are on their way.

BTW, did you let the local TU chapter know what you are doing? I am sure that either the members (or members that own FF-related busineses) would be overjoyed to kick in a little something useful (if they are "acknowledged" with a small sign or "mention").

Also, maybe we can shame "Black Ghost" into parting with some of that stuff gathering cobwebs in his basement. How 'bout it, Hal... you attorneys have a way of collecting more than you need... - nostalgia doesn't mean a thing - and it's a way to grow our sport!

Glad the book arrived, Josh new [Re: West_Sound]

Also I don't think that this qualifies me as a "great fly fisherman" in shape or form. (Perhaps a "great beer drinker" or "great collector of fishing tackle" but certainly not a "great fly fisherman".)

I'm looking forward to taking casting lessons from your club members the next time I'm up your way.

Hit the hunters up for tails, hides, etc from their activities. It can be used for tying. We even use hair from our dogs for dubbing.

Thanks again Jerry. I will keep my eye out for any packages coming to the high school. Right now we are finally starting our rod buiding. We have a number of students who are about to learn, including myself, how to build rods. I think it will be an interesting process.
Thanks,
Josh

Josh, you should've receieved them by now. I sent those over a month ago. Wasn't expensive, but was a cheaper sunrise type vise with standard tools and some misc. materials. Sent to the school addressed to you.
