Been thinking about changing my FF hat again (I do this every couple of years), now that I am going on two years spey fishing I was wondering if I should take on the spey fisherman look with the new hat. Noticed the Erin Cap seems to be popular with Spey Casters seen in books but I have not seen yet on the GL rivers, like this one:
http://www.seniors-place.com/shopping/speccolapphatsm.html
I think this would provide a nice refined look which would fit since I am 56 years old. I don't think this hat would be warm though for GLs winters and earflaps are definite must out here otherwise you are not coing to last long on the river.
What other spey fisherman hats should I consider ?
I now wearing Camo thinsulate duck hunter hats.

I have the best cap a $1.99 baseball cap from Walmart. And if it gets too cold I will wear ear muffs. I guess I'm just a down home kinda guy.

PS- if you go with the Erin hat, what next - kilts and a bagpipe??? (Not with a name like yours!)

Thanks fellows.
Jim the Walmart hat is not me. LOL
Not sure if the Filson hat would be warm enough for winter and spring steelheading here in GL. We don't have warm winters like they do in PNW. Its under consideration though.
Definitely going to do the Erin Cap for late spring, summer, and fall fishing. I think I will look good in one of them. Hey Bobk, I am 75% German and 25% Irish so the Erin Cap is an ethnic fit for me. Just have to find the right color and an insulated one. Do they have Camo Erin Caps ? Forget the kilts and bagpipes.

Fore and aft deerstalker, is the only way to go. Otherwise you will look like an American, and you wouldn't want that would you?

Willie -
Hal would look good in the "fore and aft" deerstalker, especially with the side straps to keep his ears warm during his (occasional) winter foray. I don't think that he really understands the need for a woolen tweed jacket, dress shirt and tie, and the availability of a "mud room" to REALLY look and act the part, though.

Willie,
Those are outstanding recommendations and are now on the top of the candidate new spey FF hat. Plus their look will fit with my motto " Scientia Est Potenia" (aka Knowledge is Power.) Perhaps I could have that saying stitched onthe hat in fine latin scipt. LOL
Willie, how warm are these hats ?

But you have to have a tweed jacket, shirt and tie to look right. Might also want to have a Macintosh along, too, in case it rains.
Why not go the "American Update to it and wear a Jones Hat? They come in camo, and you can get insulated models with ear flaps. Fit under a rain jacket's hood, too. (I do, most of the time - the rest it is a "packer".)
Clothes do not make the man - especially when the hat doesn't fit in with the rest of the attire!

BG, you'll have to find some smart wool knickers too. Not to mention flashes. Sounds like you need to research this a fair bit more. All those plaids and stuff.

Yeah, its getting complicated plus I need something that matches my waders and wading jacket colors. I think those hats from Scotland will do it. Just need to make sure they are insulated for our GLs winters.

First off, plaids are a natural form of camouflage. The old hunter's red and black plaid or green and black jacket was an older form of camouflage for animals (that are colorblind - as evidenced by their coloration). But fish (and birds) can distinguish color (hence the bright color, especially of the males for reproductive success) - and therefore the older British woolen plaids/tweeds in earthtone colors are a better choice for the sportsmen. These people were smart enough to realize this, knew what worked, and chose their clothing accordingly. But to pick a hat for style, and not functionality, is not too bright an idea. Remember, you're fishing, often in inclement weather, not exactly trying to take first prize in a fashion show!
Now, beginning teenage sportsmen know EXACTLY how to dress. They try to emulate the oldest, most experienced sportsmen they know. They will NOT wear a new piece of clothing without some "pretreatment" - this usually consists of a few days in the dog's bed, tossing it into the mud, laundering it a few times (and maybe bleaching it so it looks "old and worn", etc. They want to look and feel "experienced", and a new piece of clothing would "ruin the image"!

I Fish I take it you are talking about breeks, plus 4s trousers that stop just below your knee then long socks with garters to hold them up.
BobK you are right, but surely he fishes in a shirt and tie anyway? http://www.houseofbruar.com/mens.asp
BG the tweed is usually matched to the Estate, similer to tartens for the clans. So if you work on the Lovat Estate everybody wears lovat tweed. Simple realy. The colours are chosen to match the countryside, highland estates with more heather have more browns than lowland estates more green. personal camoflage.

Okay I get it now. Green or brown tweed will be good for all seasons but winter, for that I will need a white tweed hat for the GLs.
LOL
I subscribed to the House of Bruar email news letter and ordered their catalogue.
Hey Bobk what color are you wearing now? International Orange I suspect. I have orange skull cap and hunting orang vest for deer hunting season. Will need it for next week up in Michigan.

In the summer it's either a baseball cap (white when it's hot/and old sage when it's not). Winter we're back to out 'english cap,' which is a bit of an oxymoron as I purchased same from a Paris street vendor. Actually, a darned nice hat when it's cool. fae

Orange is for the amateurs. Here in NY, you don't have to wear it. My normal attire (hunting) is Malone wool logger's trousers (one color only - a gray faint plaid); red and black wool jacket; Jones hat. Served me well since I was a kid. Been replaced a few times due to wear.
No, I don't need to be fashionable to be dressed in "proper attire". Wool stays warm even when wet; therefore, it works well.

I have the Filson "Duck Billed" with the shade flap. I don't think they make it anymore but it's great for keeping the sun off your neck.

How about this one for the coldest of winter steelheading days ? Looks like I could stick a fleece patch on it and put some of my flies to. Bet this baby is really warm, wonder the lady comes with it ! LOL
Now this would be a statement hat for sure along winter rivers.

I prefer my steelheader.net hats. (nice plug, eh Marty? lol).
Seriously though. I mostly wear baseball caps. Have a hood on my jackets in case it gets cold. If it's REALLY cold out, I put on my stocking cap to keep my head/ears warm. I try to be comfortable. Don't care too much about stylish. But I do have a woolrich crush wool fealt had I wear occasionally.

How about for our upcoming snowy conditions this week on the upper xxxx? How about a boonie har in appropriate camo pattern? USMC Boonie Hat in City Camo
Maybe if it gets real white out there, I can use an automotive painters's outfit. Water-resistant too.

Willie Gunn (aka Malcolm) you were right about the Deer Stalker hat.
http://magma.nationalgeographic.com/ngm/0307/feature5/index.html
However that killing of dwindling of wild atlantic salmon and those Irish salmon fish farms are a real issue. Same issue here in the Atlantic and Pacific ocean coasts of the US, not a problem here in the Gls though.
Not sure if that Deer Stalker hat will be looked on well though by the good old krackers where I sometimes fish. Met a few more of them on Tuesday, its best to let them think you are like one of them some times. I go unshaven and wear my camo hat now whit fits right in with them.

Ah Lord Marnoch, he fishes 1 beat below me on the Deveron.
Story goes that he used to be a great Dee fisher until the Dee went total catch and release. Then rather than release his fish he left, I wouldn't miss him from the Deveron either.

Malcolm,
Please advise Lord Manoch the 19th century ended over a 100 years ago when the Irish rivers were full of wild atlantic salmon. Actually I think the decline started in the mid 20th century per my readings but I think he will get the point. I like his choice of color though for the Deer Stalker hat !
