I'm getting an Rainshadow 1143c built. What do you guys know about a spiral wrap. Is it really going to save the rod any? Or is it just going to get me a lot of strange looks on the river. Does any one fish with one? Just wondering how you like it. My other worry is that with a spiral wrap rod people might get the mistaken idea that I actually know what I am doing. I don't know if I can fish under that kind of pressure. Thanks, SS

I have built one spiral rapped rod. It fishes just fine looks funny. I got 2 Lamiglas Perigee PSH1082MH to build and I think one will be a spiral. The nice thing about it after the guides move to the other side of the blank you can use single foot guides. Steve

It would drive me nuts looking down my blank at that spiral

I think you're right. I saw a picture of one looking down the blank. Seemed pretty weird. So I decided I better go with the regular wraps. I'll hold off on the spiral until I see one up close. Don't want to get too crazy on my first custom rod. Thanks for the input guys! SS

I like my spiral wrap When ever somebody notices it, I have no pressure as they think I am an idiot for not being able to put the rod together correctly.
On a 2 piece rod it is hard to tell what rotation to stick them together at. I tied a wrap on each side of the ferrule and weaved a single gold thread in each wrap in line with the blank so I could tell when it was put together correctly.
The rod should hold up better with no torsion in the tip as the line tries to roll off to one side under pressure.
I had a guy ask me to build him a spiral wrap fly rod, I had a hard time explaining to him it would put the guides on top and not do what he wanted as he heard spiral wraps were better rods. (headshake)

I finished my first spiral wrapped 7' plug rod for a guide. He loves it. Very true feel and other than it looks different he is having me build 4 more with spiral wrapped guides, (2) of which will be bait casters. It seams to be very stable and has made reading the rod easier. Laying it out was a little difficult, but should get easier as I do more. There are 3-4 different methods on how to get the transition done, I chose to use most of the length of the blank to accomplish it.

Spiral wraps do nothing to reduce casting distance, it is suprising how straight the line can actually be while going through spiral wrapped guides.
The benefits are that the setup removes all tourque from the rod. This is very noticable on heavy weight critters like sturgeon, halibut etc. It helps in lighter rods as the blank has no tendency to tourque. The other benefit is that once the line is rotated to the bottom of a blank, you can get away with using smaller guides, and less of them due to not having to worry about keeping the line from touching the blank while under a full load.
As far as looking goofy, there is no doubt. I get all kinds of questions, "what were you drinking the night you did that?" and the like. But hand a spiral rod to a skeptic and have them yard on it, and a look of realization comes over their face. Well almost always.

okay i think this is alright when setting up say for a 9 foot rod after the first eye is set do you eyeball the twist or is there a set degrees to go form say 0 degrees on a baitcast setup? and is the spine of the rod relitive to the initial setting? thanks guys you have been really helpful

The guy that taught me how to downrig for Blackmouth had a Loomis with spiral guides that was sweet for downrigging.....I may have to look at having one built in the near future.

Get your guide spacing, either by static test or chart. need to decide if your going to use a left or right handed. The guides will be wrapped to that side. The first guide from the reel should be set slightly off center the opposite way of the wrap, this will help center the line to the reel and prevent side loading of the line. With that guide set you can run a fly blank through the tip and the strip guid and set your other guide at the spacing you had determined.

I have built several spiral wrapped rods and I love them all. They do get the looks on the water. They do look funny but they fish awsome, like everyone has said there is no torque when put under pressure. I built an 11'6" bobber rod for steelhead and it performs flawless.
