I've dug up a few up to a couple inches in size just look underneath mainly Douglas and Grand firs in wooded areas. I found them at my house after a teacher told us we could have extra credit in biology if we could bring one in. The fungus that forms them helps the trees break down needles and what not around the roots so the trees that have them tend to be a little bigger than their neighbors
