S.E. Idaho Smallmouths Exist!!!
      10/17/07 09:04 PM

I put out a post earlier this year asking for some help on where to fish for bass in the area of Idaho Falls. I had a few people that helped but unfortunately not many people in this area go after bass. Well, I then took it upon myself to do some research this summer. It was by no means extensive. I did however find out some stuff on catching bass around here and am now going to share what little I know.

Fist off, Ririe Res. is the most reliable spot I have found to catch the little scrappers. Working from the shoreline with either panther martins, or suspending crankbaits I was able to produce some hits. Also working from a boat, casting into shore, with the same or 2" mr twisters on 1/16 oz jigs worked well, and usually bigger fish (a whopping 1 lb+, hey, it's big for here). My other spot that I found out about that no one seems to acknowledge was Gem Lake, practically in I.F. I was able to catch slightly larger bass there using panther martins or jigs. I have also had hits on other types of inline spinners. The fact that they are in this spot at all tells me they have probably further invaded the Snake River in this portion of the state, making them fair game.

Beyond those 2 spots I didn't find a whole lot locally. However I have heard of them being caught as far north in the Henry's Fork as just above Ashton from reliable sources. Who knows, maybe we will become the next smallmouth mecca.

Duct tape is like the force, it has a dark side and a light side and holds the universe together.
