Bones on the Fly
      02/04/08 08:45 PM

While you guys were shoveling snow last week, I was down in Mexico, staying at a resort with family. Just so happens this resort is about 60 miles north of Ascension Bay, home of premier fishing for bonefish, permit and tarpon. Now I'd never been fishing for any of these species before, but I figured I'd give it a shot.

After many hours of beer-sodden planning with Mojo, I decided to book a trip with Pesca Maya near Punta Allen on the north side of Ascension Bay. Mom and her husband were playing host on this trip, and she likes to fish, so I booked a trip for 2; she'd spin fish and I'd flyfish. The guides said this would be fine, so I locked it in.

The resort was all-inclusive. For those of you who haven't stayed at an all-inclusive resort, the short translation is that you're drunk all the time. Well, that's what it meant for me anyway. Needless to say, the 6:15 pickup came pretty early.

After a 90 minute shuttle, we show up at the lodge and meet our guide, Pancho. He let on that he'd been doing this for 16 years, and his English was a lot better than my Spanish so everything looked good so far. I explained to Pancho that we'd never done this before, so if we could pick up a few bonefish I'd be happy.

Mom caught the first bonefish just as we were getting started.

That's Pancho in the backbground. I was starting to get an idea how this would be. On my fifth cast, I caught a small bonefish. Then another, a bit bigger.

Then one a bit bigger.

Didn’t get any real nice bones, but lots of little schoolie bonefish, I did get shots at some that were about 5 lbs. Not as easy as it looks for the bigger fish, but damn, it was fun - and I did get a lot of fish. I’ll be doing that again.

Mojo even loaned me his flats gear - Thanks! Now we just need to get down there together...
