Young Salmon Angler Lands Whopping Prize Print E-mail

KETCHIKAN, Alaska — When the awards are handed out tomorrow (Friday) for the annual Ketchikan King Salmon Derby, the grandson of Penobscot lobster fisherman Howard Heath will get the biggest payday of his young life.
Nine-year-old Gabe Heath took top honors in the 61st annual derby with his 42.7-pound king salmon, caught early in the three-week event.
For his efforts, young Gabe will receive a $10,000 cash award along with other prizes that add up to a whopping $12,626.
The derby is sponsored by the Ketchikan CHARR Educational Fund with proceeds benefiting scholarships to local students.
The event attracts more than 1,000 participants of all ages annually and local businesses sponsor the variety of cash and prizes given away to the successful anglers.
