Well heck the ocean isn't cooperating. Report from the captain was lights out Halibut fishing Thursday with over a dozen caught and a boat limit retained. There were coho everywhere, even following the halibut to the boat.
Today, even the big charters couldn't get out of Yaquina. The captain called the trip tomorrow- I offered him the two seats I've got in my boat out here on the Columbia instead.
I fished the Columbia this morning with a couple of buddies, we got one jack chinook that had a coded wire tag in it, lost another jack, and I caught a smallmouth. Pretty much every boat I talked with had a jack in the box. It's starting to look like the summer run may be jacked as well, although if the fish are clipped (as all retained jacks are until June 22) then I reckon they are still springers. Don't think the summer run fish are being clipped yet.
For a short trip, it was a welcome bit of action. I still want to pick up some steelhead and will continue working on that until I get it figured out. Summer chinook opens Monday though so I'm hoping for a good trip. I'm betting that banking it with spinners at Bonneville will probably be as productive (maybe more) than anything else.
regards, aw
