winches which ones...why?

Is the idea to get buried so deep you need a winch? Do you use it to pull logs for wood cutting. Personally I have never owned a winch..a come along I have and tow chains.

Don't get me wrong I would love to have a nice winch setup...but is it really worth the cash outlay?
Call me ignorant if you want Is bigger better..seems like it would be. How big is the right size for a toyota?
